| Alaska is.... cold. And beautiful and breathtaking. But mostly cold. Lady had the unfortunate luck of receiving the weather report for San Antonio instead of Anchorage, so she has it the worst as far as street clothes go. (How's that sarong working out for you?) The warmest part of the day was when we took part in a native "Happy Song" celebratory dance, and because I was the first to volunteer (followed by Lady and Isabella), I (we) got to wear their big red cultural blankets. I felt like a super hero. A super hero picking berries. Or milking a cow. Or whatever the dance was about. It was sweet.
We're learning all kinds of things in Alaska, like how to tell the difference between a Black Bear and a Grizzly Bear, and since it is my goal to see a live bear in person, I found this tidbit particularly interesting: To identify which bear is attacking you, and for some immediate safety, climb the nearest tree. You can tell it is a Grizzly if the bear knocks the tree over, and eats you. You can tell it is a Black Bear if it climbs the tree. And eats you.
This was learned to us by Greg, our go-to guy at the market. Since we plan on going hiking, Isabella asked what to do if we encounter a moose up close. Greg said, "Run." Isabella then asked, "Should we maintain eye contact or turn our back to the creature?" Greg replied, "Turn your back. So you can run faster."
And, as expected, we were left with this sage advice, "Remember, you don't have to outrun whatever is about to eat you. You just have to out run the slowest member of your group." For this reason, I am inventing a quick-inflate blowup doll which will live in my pocket.
Also: The Aerial Angels provided in-flight entertainment, when, in hour 5 of our journey we got really antsy and started doing partner acrobatics in the aisles. (Does this count for the mile high club?)
Also Also: Salmon quesadillas equals crazy delicious! |
